Deformation Processing of Materials

The key benefit of virtual manufacturing and simulation of processes is the reduction in the number of plant trials and thus reduction of lead-time.  The core of our research in the area of deformation processing of materials has its thrust towards developing advanced simulation technologies to be used by process designers.

Focus Areas

  1. ALE based simulation tools: Simulation framework based on arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian framework to reduce mesh-related problems during large deformation

  2. Extrusion of Aluminum: Predicting the material flow in flat die extrusion of aluminum with a focus on predicting the dead metal zone

  3. Semi-solid metal processing: Developing models for the rheology of semi-solid model suspension with reduced empiricism.

Industrial Case Studies

  1. Preform design for ring rolling: An efficient tool for simulation of flow during cold ring rolling for further use in preform design

  2. Enhancement of die life in cold heading: Redesigning the die contour for enhancing the die life and increasing the yield
